Tutoring students online for more than 12 years
Tutoring Approach
I tutor students from all over the United States (and the world) online in personal, one-on-one sessions. While we technically are in a video meeting, the focus is on a shared screen where we both view the questions you missed on the test, and I create a personalized strategy guide based on those questions. Each time we meet we add to your strategy guide, which you can access as a PDF file in a personal Google Drive folder I provide that contains all your tutoring materials. Between sessions, you apply the strategies on additional practice tests to create "muscle memory" for those strategies.
SAT and ACT Tutoring
I specialize in helping students prepare quickly and efficiently for the SAT and/or the ACT. Rather than go through lots of different lessons, I provide an actual past test to take at home before the first session, and then in our session we discuss overall test strategies and focus on the questions you missed and how to get those questions right on the next test. Each session we will add to a personalized set of strategies based on the questions you missed. Once we've reviewed the first test, you take another test and we gauge improvement, then review the questions you missed on that second test. As your score improves on each test, you miss fewer questions and we can review the test in a shorter amount of time.
- The test is shorter (it can be completed in two hours instead of three hours). This helps greatly for students who suffer from test fatigue or who have shorter attention spans.
- The test is online, instead of on paper. Generally, I think this makes tests much harder than on paper, but some students find online tests much more accessible.
- The long reading passages have been replaced by short passages that have only one stand-alone question.
- The math sections incorporate the Desmos Graphing Calculator into the test. Once a student gets familiar with the use of Desmos, they will be able to solve as many as 65% of the math questions using Desmos.
ISEE and SSAT Tutoring
I specialize in helping students prepare quickly and efficiently for the ISEE and/or the SSAT. Often these tests will include some material the student hasn't learned yet in school (particularly Algebra), so a major focus of the tutoring is helping the student confidently deal with unfamiliar material.
Generally, I begin by having the student take a practice test at home, and then we meet to review the questions the students missed on the test. After that, the student uses the strategies we discussed on a second practice test, and if desired, we meet again to review that second test. Often, this is all the preparation a student might need for the ISEE or SSAT.
An alternative approach is to begin with a session to introduce the different types of questions on the test and the strategies the student can use to solve them. After that, the student takes the first practice test at home and then meets with me to review the test.
In either case, I help students approach the ISEE or SSAT confidently after a very moderate amount of tutoring.
LSAT Tutoring
I specialize in helping students prepare quickly and efficiently for the LSAT. We begin with introductory overview sessions on each of the three main subject areas (logical reasoning, analytical reasoning, and reading comprehension). Then, you practice on materials I provide and come back for more in-depth sessions in each subject area once you've mastered the basics. Each session we add to a personalized set of strategies you can apply on real past LSAT tests to gauge your actual improvement and zero in on your goal score.
MCAT CARS (Reading Comprehension) Tutoring
I specialize in helping students prepare quickly and efficiently for the MCAT CARS section. We begin by discussing your overall approach to the CARS section and suggesting an approach to use. After that, you practice the approach on passages and then in subsequent sessions we begin to focus on more detailed strategies for each question type, and discuss adapting the approach for different types of passages. Each session we add to a personalized set of strategies you can study in order to quickly reach and exceed your goal score.
GMAT and GRE Tutoring
I specialize in helping students prepare quickly and efficiently for the GMAT and/or the GRE. I generally recommend that you start by taking an actual practice test that we will reviewing in our first sessions. By focusing only on the questions you missed, we build a personalized set of strategies that you can use on practice questions to build muscle memory for the strategies. Once we've reviewed the first test, you practice the strategies on materials I provide, then take another real GMAT or GRE practice test to gauge improvement, and then we repeat the process until you reach or exceed your goal score.

Bobby Hood has over 13 years of experience helping students with their college essays and college applications. He focuses mostly on helping students with admissions essays, choosing colleges, building a resumé, and completing their applications.
Bobby works with his colleague Ariel Pizzamiglio to provide top-shelf service for students who want to write a powerful and engaging college admissions essay.

Students who enroll in admissions essay consulting will work with both Bobby and Ariel on drafting and revising their essay.
The admissions essay consulting package is billed at a flat rate of $800 (equivalent to two hours of tutoring time) to help with your personal statement (main essay) as well as short answer essays. The fee for working on additional admissions essays will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
